A Message From The Meyer C. Weiner Company

Last year in preparation for my 52nd ICSC Convention (which would have been my 53rd had it not been for COVID,) I wrote a message that was measurably troubling as it was filled with the snapshot view of the time. Inflation, costs of construction materials, goods, services, supplies, labor, and capital were all at generational high points. Yet, being the optimists that we must be in this business, we looked forward to having another successful Convention and a year of improvement. As Melinda Gates said, “Optimism isn’t a belief that things will automatically get better; it’s a conviction that we can make things better.”
And so, we remained true to the fundamentals of our culture, working hard to look at the long game. Making decisions based upon what is best for our properties, our tenants, our communities and our company by keeping the foundation of what we do based on asset appreciation and incremental growth over years, not quarters.
What has been our blessing throughout my career is the fact that our developments are extremely well located, and our markets are fundamentally sound and less volatile than others. If we keep improving our portfolio and emphasizing the attributes of each of our properties, we will succeed. “The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you.” Barack Obama
We are not waiting. We are being proactive by facing our challenges in the areas of financing and refinancing, building new for our valued tenants, broadening the scope of our development types and offerings and continuing the collaborative way we do business. We respect our colleagues and value their contribution to our many successes.
Speaking of our team, some of our tenured personnel are transitioning to retirement. They will be dearly missed. However, we are most fortunate to have talented and experienced individuals who are ready to broaden their responsibilities and continue our way of doing business.
As we head into my 53rd ICSC Convention, the world’s largest gathering of those representing the commercial real estate industry, I am confident that we will continue to grow and remain strong. We will, once again, bring our passion to the event and strengthen existing relationships and forge new ones!
Here’s to a great show!
